Original Letter to Groton

June 7, 2020

To the Board of Trustees & Administration of Groton School:

As protestors across the globe continue to mobilize against structural racism, whether on the front lines at rallies or through active resource redistribution, Groton alumni received an email on June 4, 2020 inviting us to a “Virtual Food & Beverage Weekend.” We were offered a lesson on tasting whiskey, a cooking class with rosé, and  a virtual tour of a Groton alum’s vineyard. Hours later, alumni received another email announcing the postponement of these clearly inappropriately timed events. This oversight is merely one instantiation of Groton’s apparently persistent culture of complacency in the face of rampant inequality and overt racial violence. We recognize that the lived experiences of students may have improved since we graduated. Nevertheless, graduates can recall myriad circumstances where we noticed such offenses, and felt little institutional support. To complement this note, we have set up a site for alumni to share recollections of interpersonal and institutional racism they experienced at Groton (whether as the victim, perpetrator, or beneficiary): [LINK TO VIEW COMPILATION].

Groton is proud of its strong academic reputation, yet it continues to turn a blind eye to the lessons that matter most. When faced with an opportunity to take a meaningful stance, as so many other companies and organizations have done, Groton simply included a reference to that one time the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. spoke on campus. Instead of dedicating real time, space, and financial support to the issue at hand, a brief, linked article was included in a regularly-scheduled update email. As mentioned above, this is a patterned form of inaction that characterized our years at Groton. In 2016, when a racist, anti-black slur was shouted on campus, and a group of Black alumni sent Groton administrators a letter regarding this clearly unacceptable behavior, they received no reply. Lest these facts be forgotten or sanitized, we would like to highlight that Dr. King recognized the specious nature of inaction in the face of racial injustice:

"I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says: ‘I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action’; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a ‘more convenient season.’ Shallow understanding from people of good will is more frustrating than absolute misunderstanding from people of ill will. Lukewarm acceptance is much more bewildering than outright rejection." (“Letter from a Birmingham Jail”; April 16, 1963)

and staunchly opposed wealth inequality:

“Again we have deluded ourselves into believing the myth that Capitalism grew and prospered out of the Protestant ethic of hard work and sacrifice. The fact is that capitalism was built on the exploitation and suffering of black slaves and continues to thrive on the exploitation of the poor – both black and white, both here and abroad.” (“The Three Evils of Society”; August 31, 1967)

Groton is in a unique position to use its far-reaching network of immense wealth to materially support its purported ideological commitments both to antiracism and equality more broadly. We acknowledge and commend efforts already in place (e.g., GRAIN) to increase accessibility to a Groton education. We are also excited to hear that faculty and board members have communicated with students about strategically engaging in protest, reminiscent of when Headmaster John Crocker drove students to protests in Boston during the Civil Rights Movement. Today’s protests are not a passing fad; they constitute a historically pivotal moment for antiracism that this country has arguably not seen since 1968. Groton must not remain neutral, and its institutional efforts must extend past the Circle. Groton has an endowment totaling more than $1,000,000 per student, returning millions of dollars every year. In its recent 24-hour Give2Groton campaign, Groton raised over $1.2 million in donations ($125,000 of which was matched by the Board of Trustees, not to mention the nearly $400,000 matched by parent groups). Indeed, such wealth shows itself plainly through upper-class alumni engagement events such as those mentioned above.

If Groton has the resources and alumni power to organize events such as personal vineyard tours, why not use that privilege? Why not use the opportunity to fundraise for causes that don’t grab the attention of our wealthy (and primarily white) alumni? Why not organize events that encourage Grotonians to be active contributors to racial justice? As a community uniquely positioned to make change, Groton (its alumni, students, faculty, and administration) has a responsibility to do better and to live up to its motto: “Cui servire est regnare.” We insist that Groton:

  • Or its Board of Trustees encourage and match donations to organizations providing frontline support to antiracist efforts, such as The Movement for Black Lives, NAACP Legal Defense Fund, Color of Change, and Equal Justice Initiative, and up to $200,000 or greater;

  • Encourage alumni to leverage their expertise (e.g., legal, legislative, medical, psychological) toward supporting those on the frontline of antiracist efforts;

  • Remediate all curricula (e.g., history, English, languages, ethics, ecology, STEM, etc.) and extracurricular activities (e.g., peer counseling, Wellness, theater) to better center the histories and perspectives of peoples of color; these curricula must delve into the history of structural racism and must incorporate an understanding of how oppressive narratives continue to shape the way we all think.

  • Clearly communicate a plan to increase racial diversity and cultural competence among students, faculty, psychological services, office of admissions, leadership, board of trustees, and invited school speakers. Statistics must be made publicly available regarding specific categories of racial self-identification among these groups. Any effort to increase racial diversity must also center the retention of those who are hired, accepted, etc.

  • Formally query and teach students about the institution’s historical and contemporary complicity in structural oppression. This includes, but is not limited to racist and gendered wage gaps, hiring practices, and disciplinary trends;

  • Publicly release a full list of its endowment holdings. Groton’s investment strategy must align with its dedication to “diversity and inclusion.” In the absence of such alignment, Groton must communicate its plans to divest from companies that recapitulate structural racism and environmental injustice (as current students have been advocating for). More broadly, Groton must work with students and alumni to develop and publicize Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) criteria for its investments.
